The Roger Bannister Running Track
The Oxford University track, popularly known as the Roger Bannister running track, is a 400-meter athletics track and stadium located in Oxford, England. When it was known as the Iffley Road track, it was where Sir Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile on May 6, 1954. The University of Oxford owns and operates the track.
One of the greatest sporting achievements took place on Iffley Road.
Medical student and physiologist Roger Bannister broke through the ‘cement wall’ on 6 May 1954, completing the mile race in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.
To view the track, walk down Jackdaw Lane and then turn right into the Oxford University Sports centre. You can walk around behind this to see the track.
