Chipping Norton and Surrounding Area

Chipping Norton is an historic market town in Oxfordshire, on the edge of the Cotswolds. The beautiful surrounding countryside has many charming villages, therefore making this a wonderful part of the country to explore. Read on to find out more about local attractions, restaurants and pubs, shops and things to do in our Chipping Norton guide.

Dating back to Mediaeval times, ‘Chipping’ derives from an old English word for market. The town was historically a major centre for the wool trade. Today, Chipping Norton (‘Chippy’, as it is known to locals) is a lively place with plenty to enjoy; it is also an excellent base from which to explore the Cotswolds and surrounding villages. Kingham, Churchill, Charlbury and Chadlington have an abundance of charm, and Burford and Stow-on-the-Wold are full of quintessential Cotswold appeal.

Daylesford Organic, Soho Farmhouse and Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop are a short drive away. Chipping Norton itself has a fantastic literary festival, a thriving theatre (with a perennially popular pantomime amongst its programme of events!), several restaurants, cosy pubs and independent and antique shops, making it an excellent tourist destination with plenty to explore in the town and its surrounds. See below for our guide to Chipping Norton attractions – There is plenty to discover!
