The Best Affordable or Free Summer Activities in the Cotswolds

Discover the Top 9 Inexpensive or Free Things to Do in the Cotswolds This Summer.

The Cotswolds, with its charming villages, rolling hills, and historic sites, offers a plethora of activities that won’t break the bank. Whether you’re a fan of strolling through idyllic villages, hiking scenic trails, or simply relaxing in beautiful gardens, the Cotswolds offers something for everyone. While there are plenty of ways to splurge on a visit here, you don’t need to break the bank to experience its beauty and culture. Here’s a guide to our favourite, budget-friendly activities to enjoy this summer.

Explore Cotswold Villages

Wander through picturesque villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, and Stow-on-the-Wold. These quaint villages are filled with honey-coloured stone cottages, scenic views, and welcoming locals. Simply walking around and soaking in the charm costs nothing and offers a relaxing experience – as well as some Instagram worthy photos! One of our favourite places to walk and explore are the riverside walks of Bourton-on-the-Water and The Slaughters or if you want to go a little further afield, on the outskirts of the Cotswolds you will find the historic town of Woodstock, the home of Blenheim Palace.

Hike the Cotswold Way

The Cotswold Way is a 102-mile-long National Trail that runs from Chipping Campden to Bath. You don’t have to tackle the entire trail; select a section that appeals to you. Enjoy breathtaking views, historic sites, and the beauty of the Cotswolds countryside. Pack a picnic to make it a full-day adventure without spending a penny. Popular segments include the walk between Broadway and Chipping Campden.

Visit Market Days

Many Cotswold towns hold weekly markets that are free to browse. Check out the bustling markets in Stroud, Cirencester, and Moreton-in-Marsh. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, and perhaps indulge in some local produce or homemade crafts if your budget allows. We highly recommend visiting Stroud Farmers’ Market. Held on Saturdays, it offers a vibrant mix of fresh local produce, artisan goods, and crafts, set against the charming backdrop of Stroud’s historic streets. The market is known for its high-quality offerings, including organic vegetables, handmade cheeses, and delicious baked goods

Discover Historic Churches

The Cotswolds is home to many beautiful and historic churches, such as St. Mary’s Church in Fairford and St. James’ Church in Chipping Campden. These churches often have unique architecture, stunning stained glass windows, and fascinating histories. Entry is usually free, though donations are appreciated. We recommend visiting St Martin’s Church in Bladon this historic church is where Winston Churchill is buried, the church has elegant architecture, providing a fitting final resting place for the revered British Prime Minister. Visitors often come to pay their respects amidst the tranquil beauty of the churchyard.

Picnic in the Park

There are several lovely parks perfect for a summer picnic. Consider visiting Pittville Park in Cheltenham, Abbey Grounds in Cirencester, or the Lido Park in Chipping Norton. These parks offer lush green spaces, playgrounds for children, and sometimes even free summer events.

Explore Local Museums

Some local museums offer free entry or ask for a small donation. The Corinium Museum in Cirencester showcases fascinating Roman history, while the Tetbury Police Museum offers quirky insights into the local law enforcement history. These museums provide a rich cultural experience for a minimal cost.

Tour the Gardens

Several gardens in the Cotswolds are free to enter or charge a small fee. The Painswick Rococo Garden, though it has a modest entry fee, is a delight with its whimsical design. Alternatively, the sensory garden at the Barnwood Arboretum in Gloucester is free and offers a peaceful retreat.
