A Brief History of Leamington Spa

Leamington Spa has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the 17th century. Officially known as Royal Leamington Spa, its name is derived from the river Leam which runs through the town. During the 17th Century, Leamington Spa began to gain recognition for its medicinal springs, which were believed to have healing powers.

During the 18th century, the town underwent a major transformation when William Abbotts and Dr Kerrison promoted the medicinal benefits of the local spa waters. This resulted in a surge of visitors. In the 19th century, Leamington Spa had been granted its ‘royal’ prefix by Queen Victoria and by the 20th century, the economy had evolved beyond the spa industry, incorporating manufacturing, especially in the automotive sector.

Today, Leamington Spa is known for its well-preserved Regency architecture, parks, and garden as well as being a growing hub for the gaming industry. It has a vibrant cultural scene, with various events, festivals and a wide mix of independent shops and restaurants. The town retains its historic charm while embracing modern amenities.
