Don't miss these essential events in Henley-on Thames. The Henley Royal Regatta and the Henley Festival are way up at the top of the list of must-visit social events.
Henley Royal Regatta
Henley Royal Regatta is indisputably the best known regatta in the world. As both a highlight of the summer sporting calendar, and the social season in the United Kingdom since the end of the 19th century Henley Royal Regatta is nothing short of a British institution.
The chic, annual (except during the first and second world wars) event attracts thousands of visitors over a five day period. Spectators are entertained and thrilled by more than 250 international standard races rowed by both Olympians and crews new to the event in addition to a host of entertainment happening inside the enclosures. Think picnics in the sunshine, Pimms out of plastic cups (in many cases), panama hats, boating blazers, and Wind in the Willows scenery Henley Royal Regatta is a unique day of traditional sporting fun in the sun (and occasionally rain)!
Henley Festival is a festival like no other, it is an upmarket, civilised celebration of the best of international and UK music, art, food and culture in a quintessentially British location.
The annual event takes place over five days and draws in audiences in excess of 30,000 who come to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a vibrant programme of high quality performances and activities where art and gastronomy share equal billing with music.

The world’s biggest festival dedicated to the 1980s takes place beside the Thames at Henley. Each year the festival attracts over 40,000 festival-goers and more than 25 bands who all appear to have a great deal of fun dressing up in legwarmers, ra-ra skirts and denim on denim!
Taking place on Temple Island Meadows in Henley-on-Thames a River Taxi service operates to transport visitors across the water from the town centre to enjoy their weekend in the festival fields at Rewind Festival. From a Kidzone, to firework displays, a funfair, luxury loos, and glamping, Rewind Festival has thought of everything to make the weekend as enjoyable, fun and comfortable as possible for everyone. Festival director David Heartfield said “… this is a feel good event that is all about escapism… The music is like a giant conveyor belt of pop, and there is a host of other things to do, from karaoke, to themed bars, a bandstand and an inflatable church. It’s lots of fun.”
